The rise of small scale Rooibos farmers in the Khoi and San communities

The Khoi and San people have become the first indigenous people in the world to have their traditional knowledge recognised by industry.

A historic benefit-sharing agreement was reached between these groupings and the Rooibos industry. It resulted in a percentage of all commercial sales at farm gates of around R12 million per year, to be put into trust.
Now, with their centuries-old knowledge of the plant officially acknowledged, there is hope that it will translate to tangible change for this long marginalised people, but also greater development for small scale Rooibos farmers.
