The largest wildfire in California history has cremated the once-stunning landscape, homes and cars almost beyond recognition - and officials say the worst is yet to come.

Fire crews worked to contain southern California’s Holy Fire on August 8, spraying the area with fire retardant to contain the blaze.

The Holy Fire had burned through 10,236 acres by the evening of August 9. The blaze was five percent contained. Officials expected it would take until August 15 for the fire to be fully extinguished, saying high temperatures and low humidity created optimum burn conditions.

Mandatory evacuations were issued for many of the surrounding neighborhoods. The evacuation area covered some 7,449 homes and numerous commercial structures with estimated number of evacuees totaling 21,484 people, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection reported.

Some 14,000 firefighters have been called in to battle 18 separate blazes which, in just 11 days, have incinerated an area roughly the size of Los Angeles.
