Cities, where over 80% of global GDP is generated, play three roles in global development: They are the drivers of economic growth, anchors of development in a shifting global landscape, and matchmakers that connect people to jobs. By 2050, 66 out of 100 people in the world will live in cities. But cities are under growing pressure—from the global economic slowdown, natural disasters and climate change, as well as the urgent need to improve basic services for the urban poor.
