The Colombian government and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, known as FARC, are preparing to sign an amended peace agreement.
The deal will be signed by President Juan Manuel Santos and the FARC’s leader Rodrigo Londono in the Colombian capital Bogota later Thursday. Santos has said he will send the accord to the country’s Congress for approval. The new deal is a modified version which has seen more than 50 changes compared to the original agreement that was narrowly rejected by voters in a referendum in early October. The opposition has rejected the peace deal, saying it does not go far enough in punishing rebels who committed scores of atrocities. The conflict between the government and the FARC has claimed more than 220000 lives and displaced millions of people over the past 52 years.
