By the time Rolf was born in Freiburg in the southwestern corner of Germany where it met France and Switzerland, the Berlin Wall had already stood on the other side of the country for over a decade. Living in a divided Germany was a fact of life, but felt far from normal. Imagine if all of NSW became a separate country, and half of Canberra was still allowed to be part of Australia, but no longer the capital city. It never made sense to Rolf either.
