The United Nations says that the reputation of Myanmar’s government is at risk over reports of crimes against Rohingya Muslims.
The UN’s special adviser on the prevention of genocide said that the allegations must be verified urgently. Adama Dieng said that lives of thousands of people were at risk if those allegations were proven to be true. Dieng said that the allegations were not going to be ignored or go unexamined. The UN official also urged Myanmar to find a sustainable solution to the situation of the Rohingya Muslims and other minorities in Myanmar. Violence against the Rohingyas reignited after reports of killings of several police officers and attacking border posts on October 9. State soldiers raped Rohingya women, burnt houses, killed civilians and forced thousands of people to flee the area during a military operation in Rakhine state following the report.
