Mr Paul Nankivell FRCS (ORL-HNS), PhD and Mr Ajith George FRCS (ORL-HNS) are Otolaryngologists trained in the West Midlands, UK. This short video demonstrates their technique for dividing the sphenopalatine artery (SPA) in the management of refractory epistaxis.
The video was produced by www.endoscope-i.com highlights the key steps in this procedure that we feel will maintain a high rate of success in controlling epistaxis. In particular, accurate identification of ALL branches of the SPA, including dissection onto the front face of the sphenoid to divide the posterior septal branches.
We hope trainees will find this video useful for their surgical education and look forward to hearing your feedback.
We would like to thank all our trainers in the region who have been instrumental in developing our technique. In particular Mr Shahz Ahmed, Mr David Howe and Mr Shahram Anari.
