Between age seven and 15, Walaa was raised in a West Bank refugee camp while her mother was imprisoned in an Israeli jail. Her mother's release reunites Walaa's family, but the eight-year separation has come at a steep cost. Like her mother, Walaa is driven to serve her people. However, her dreams of joining the Palestinian Security Forces, which employs few women, go against her mother's wishes. Walaa enters training, but her lack of discipline and a refusal to play by the rules threaten to derail her hopes of graduation.

Shot over six years, with unprecedented access to the Palestinian police academy, director Christy Garland's documentary offers an incisive look at the impacts of systemic oppression on families. Walaa is a force to be reckoned with and mesmerizing to watch. At times she appears as an unruly teenager with show-off tendencies, but her family's legacy of sacrifice for the cause is an immense burden to bear. Under this kind of pressure, is it any wonder that she rails against anyone who attempts to put her in her place? One thing is certain: she is determined to forge her own path, on her own terms.
